Sam Dolman was born in Scunthorpe North Lincolnshire, where he lived until he was 18. He then moved to Newcastle-upon-Tyne to study Accountancy, where he spent the next four years. After graduating it soon became apparent that figures were not the life for him. Following a year in Leeds and a period of travelling through Europe he settled in Spain where he began his artistic journey. He began to teach himself the techniques that are now synonymous with his unique style. Realising his true calling in life - he returned to England to settle in Sheffield with new found motivation.
Art was always an interest in his life from an early age, having come from a creative family. His father Eric was a professional Opera singer and mother Lynn has painted most of her life. Both have now moved to the southern mountain ranges of Spain. Needless to say this is always a welcome place for Sam to relax, capture his thoughts and gain inspiration.
Inspiration
Living in Sheffield has great advantages for an artist. The hills of the Peak District and the glorious scenery of Derbyshire are always home to an abundance of wildlife. Many hours are spent with the animals in their natural habitat gathering reference material. It is great to get out in the fresh air and this becomes one of the most enjoyable stages of the artist’s work Observing them closely is important to really become acquainted with their behaviour and personality. This is crucial to Sam’s work. Many paintings offer a humorous view of the subject as this is what the artist sees when he is with them.
Painting Techniques
Sketches are sometimes made on location in the design stage. It enables the artist to make a quick impression of the mood and pose of the animal. Once a particular position has been chosen it is down to the camera to capture the detail. The composition and design starts in the studio
Sam likes to create work which is bold and engaging to help attract the eye. Getting close helps emphasise the personality of the subject. At this point the painting begins to depart from reality in the sense that the subject will often be placed in different surroundings. Most backgrounds are really quite abstract, simply so that the focus is always on the subject. Colour is of great importance and this gives the Artist a chance to experiment and play. This creative use of colour corresponds to different moods and feelings wishing to be portrayed. Subtle blending techniques are used throughout the painting process adding to the overall feel within the image. Glazes are also applied frequently to enhance the image.
Sam has gone from strength to strength over the last few years. His art is mainly sold in the UK although he has collectors worldwide from America to Thailand. He hopes to continue in this success by expanding his repertoire and keeping a focus on quality work. - -
